Roof waterproofing or commonly known as terrace waterproofing is one of the most common waterproofing done to ensure the roofs are leakage and crack free. The small drip of rain water can mess the whole roof foundation if the water penetrates the roof’s structure.
The common signs of weak roof are:
- Dripping of rain water from the roof
- Cracks and roof walls appear greyish black
- The roof walls appear to be yellowish brown
- Roof paint starts to peel off
The are many roof waterproofing methods. Some of them are temporary and are some are permanent. As per the analysis of the roof’s foundation the different methods are used to waterproof the roof internally and externally.
Some common roof waterproofing methods are:
- Liquid Waterproofing membrane
- Bituminous Coating
- Cementitious Waterproofing
- Polyurethane Liquid Membrane
Liquid Waterproofing membrane
In this method the Liquid waterproofing membrane is sprayed which is composed of polymer-modified asphalt. A thin coat is applied using a spray, roller or a trowel.
The liquid gets penetrated into the pours of the walls and becomes elongated. A kind a special polymer is used which has properties that it gets elongated. Durability of this method is about 5 -10 years depending upon the material used.
Bituminous coating is also commonly called as asphalt coating. It’s specially used in concrete roof surfaces. The coating can easily applied on the roof. The results are not permanent.
This coating is not suitable for roofs which are highly exposed to sunlight. The coating material becomes hard and brittle when exposed to sunlight for long durations.
This is one of the easiest method used for water proofing of a roof. The materials used in this type of water proofing are easy available in the market. Easy to mix and apply.
The waterproofing is not harmed by high exposure to sunlight. There is no contraction and expansion found in this waterproofing. The only disadvantage of this waterproofing is it’s usually rigid and semi-flexible type. This is mostly used internal area’s of the roof.
Polyurethane Liquid Membrane
This is one of the most expensive method of roof waterproofing. It also provides the maximum flexibility. It’s used on roofs which are directly exposed to different weather conditions.
The polymer used in this method is of high quality and highly trained professionals are required for the whole process.
It’s always better to consult a professional and use the right method to ensure the roof is 100% waterproof and leakage free.
